NEW CHAPEL AT MONTREAL’S DISTINGUISHED SYNAGOGUE

A WORSHIP SPACE

Following a selection process Studio Gruss was invited to join the team in charge of designing the new chapel at Shaar Hashomayim in Montreal. The word Shamayim in Hebrew, sky and water, became the central concept proposed by Alex Gruss culminating in the “waves” pattern appearing on the brass Torah Ark doors and on the Mechitsahs partitions standing along the chapel space. See the wavy shadows reflecting on the carpet as well as on the sides of the Ark, light and shadows add another dimension to the beauty of the composition. Atelier TAG, a Montreal based architecture firm planned and executed the rest of the worship space.
